Voor het eerste avondvullende concert van SP!TSBERGEN inspireerde George De Decker 

zich op de onvoltooide roman ‘Le Mont Analogue’ van René Daumal (1908-1944).
De beklimming van de top dient slechts één doel: het avontuur van het onbekende, schreef Daumal over het alpinisme.
Zou dat geen motto kunnen zijn voor alle kunst?

Het imaginaire reizen is een steeds terugkerend motto in het oeuvre van George De Decker.
Ook wie nog nooit de Noordelijke Ijszee heeft gezien, denkt hierbij aan romantische uitzichten op eenzame landschappen, 

gletsjers, fjorden en vooral aan het eeuwige ijs.
Volgens hem is er geen beter vertrekpunt voor een imaginaire wereldreis dan SP!TSBERGEN.
In 2013 realiseerde hij o.m. de klankband voor het multimediaal project ØRNEN 1897,
een hommage aan de eerste ballonvaarders over de Noordpool (https://youtu.be/-WxjS7oufP4).

SP!TSBERGEN is een ensemble van jonge muzikanten samengebracht door componist George De Decker.
Harp, accordeon, bastuba en contrabas worden gecombineerd met live electronics:  een ongewone, kleurrijke, spannende kruisbestuiving.
Vijf jonge, eminente muzikanten gaan bij elk concert in dialoog met een uitgekiende klankband. 

Hun partituur blijft echter wel open voor improvisatie.
Daarbij wordt ingezet op een zo rijk mogelijk palet aan timbres: vocale en instrumentale klanken, natuurgeluiden, computergestuurde klankmanipulatie.
Maar elektronica blijft altijd dienstbaar. 

Net als de harp, accordeon, bastuba en contrabas is het een penseel dat mag helpen schilderen 

aan nieuwe landschappen voor het oor.
Spannend, kleurrijk, ongewoon.

Le Mont Analogue 

For the first full-length concert of SPITSBERGEN George De Decker was inspired by the unfinished novel, “Le Mont Analogue”, by French author René Daumal (1908-1944).

 

Daumal wrote extensively about alpinism:

"The ascent of the summit serves only one purpose: the adventure of the unknown."

SP!TSBERGEN is a brand new Belgian music ensemble, founded by composer and visual artist George De Decker. 

Harp, accordion, tuba and double bass are combined with live electronics: an unusual, colorful, exciting cross-fertilization. 

During every concert, five young and gifted musicians enter into dialogue through a sophisticated soundtrack; their score always remaining open for improvisation. 

The attention is focused on developing as rich a palette of timbres as possible: vocal and instrumental sounds are crafted together with alternative sounds, procured from nature and electronic sound manipulation.

The electronics do not overpower, and they play a subtle, yet key role in complementing and fusing together the other instruments. Like the harp, accordion, tuba and double bass, it provides yet another a brush that can help paint fresh, new landscapes for the ear.

This time, he drew inspiration from the world between idea and reality that constitutes the unreal setting of René Daumal’s novel Le Mont Analogue. In it, eight mountaineers bravely start the journey to the world’s highest mountain peak, hidden in a curvature of space … an adventure into the unknown. Are you in?
